Do I Need Paint Correction? Is your vehicle’s paint looking dull, oxidized, or hazy? When you check it under sunlight, do you notice swirls or scratches resembling spider webs? Are stubborn hard water spots refusing to come off? If so, you’ve come to the right place!

Paint correction is a polishing process designed to remove imperfections and restore the shine of your car’s painted surfaces. Swirls, scratches, oxidation, and water spots all diminish the clarity and brilliance of your paint. Imagine your car’s paint as a smooth plot of land—these defects create small valleys or divots that scatter light, reducing its shine. For a mirror-like finish, the light needs to reflect uniformly from the surface.

How Do These Defects Happen? The most common imperfections you’ll find on automotive paint are swirls, scratches, oxidation, and water spots.

Swirls, which appear like spider webs under direct sunlight or LED lighting, are actually countless fine scratches going in various directions. They are often caused by automatic car washes, improper washing or drying techniques, or the infamous “dry wipe” used to remove dust after a drive or before a car show.

How Severe Are My Paint Imperfections? Even freshly painted vehicles can have minor defects or contamination that warrant paint correction. Some common issues include:

  • Oxidation (faded paint)
  • Clear coat failure (clear coat worn away, exposing the color layer)
  • Dirt nibs
  • Crow’s feet (tiny cracks in the paint)
  • Solvent pop (air bubbles trapped in the curing clear coat)

While many of these issues can be addressed with decontamination, wet sanding, or polishing, others—like clear coat failure—may require a repaint. Scroll down to see examples of different imperfections and their solutions.

“Spider Webs” ✔️

Swirls look like spider webs in your paint when looking at it in direct sunlight or under proper LED lighting. In reality, they are thousands of straight scratches going every which way. They can be caused by tunnel car washes, improper washing/drying, or the famous “dry wipe” after a drive or before a car show to knock the dust off.

Water Spots or Etching ✔️

Water spots are left behind after washing with hard water, not drying the vehicle completely or from those automatic car washes. They look like small circles that have eaten into the clear coat of your vehicle after the water has dried. Washing again or trying to wipe them clean won’t cut it and can often damage the paint further.

Oxidation ✔️

One of the most misunderstood sources of paint oxidation is assuming that direct sunlight causes oxidation. That’s not quite accurate. While oxidation is produced by the combination of heat and oxygen, the ‘heat’ is actually derived from UV rays. As UV light continually hits the clear coat, it slowly penetrates the coating and begins to heat the paint. This introduces oxygen to the under-layer of paint, and as heat is absorbed by the metal, fading occurs.
